I didnt own a car and was depending on a school friend, Gary Williams, for transportation that day. I had planned everything out so we could be at each stop the President made. I waited with the other press people to be bussed back to a hangar where Gary was waiting. We hurried to Al Lopez Field because the President was soon to be whisked there by helicopter to make an address commemorating the 50th anniversary of commercial air flight.

When we arrived the President was there mulling around the podium waiting for introductions to begin. And they didvery quickly. It was as Kennedy was about to speak that I took one of my most famous images.

Oddly, I still remember the very instant I snapped the picture (1/250th of a second) 40 years ago and praying that it was exposed well. I knew if it came out it would be special. The years have been good to the small (35mm) negative it was recorded on.
