I looked over to the cockpit side of Air Force One where the press door was and saw James H. Couey, Jr., then publisher of The Tampa Tribune and president of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce. Couey had accompanied JFK to Tampa and briefed him about the city on the way.
Kennedy was greeted by dignitaries of MacDill Air Force Base. Behind the President were U.S. Representatives Claude Pepper and Sam Gibbons and U.S. Senator George Smathers of Florida, who had been best man when a young Senator Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier some ten years earlier. |
